Carpet Stain Buster: Tough Spots

Thankfully I have friends who occasionally send me pictures of their Norwex successes because I haven't been doing much for interesting cleaning lately.  I did a lot of dusting with the dusting mitt last week (ceiling fans, light fixtures, etc.) but I've blogged about that stuff already.

Anyway, my friend Amy sent me some picture last week.  Thank you, Amy!

This is where her dog threw up.  She has two very large dogs (together they weigh like 150+ lbs).  She tried another carpet cleaner on it first.  This is what she was left with.
Then she tried the Carpet Stain Buster.  Stain is gone!  The Carpet Stain Buster is an enzyme product.  You can learn more about enzymes here.
This is another dog puke stain but this one is over a year old.
Again, she used the Carpet Stain Buster and was able to get it out!

Carpet Stain Buster - Cat Yack

I have a cat who has a sensitive tummy.  Unfortunately, with two small children, she often finds something on the floor to eat which doesn't agree with her tummy.  A few times a month, I find myself cleaning up cat yack from our light colored carpet.  I've tried several products but have found the Carpet Stain Buster works the best.

Here is the spot left after picking up the chunks.  This stuff stains horribly.

I sprayed it with the Carpet Stain Buster and let it sit for 5 minutes.  Then I came back, scrubbed the spot a bit and voila!  No more spot!

The Carpet Stain Buster is a enzyme product and doesn't leave a soapy residue behind like most products.  Dirt gets stuck to this residue so the spot you cleaned up, slowly comes back.

What the Heck are Enzymes?

This is something I've been meaning to research for quite some time.  Many of our cleaning products are enzyme based vs. manufactured chemicals.  So, lets figure out what these things are.  (In simple terms.  That's all I'm capable of.)

So, some research tells me that enzymes are a protein that acts as a catalyst.  They help reactions occur about one million times faster than they would without the enzyme.  The enzyme finds the organic material, breaks it down into smaller pieces and the smaller pieces are digested into carbon dioxide and water.  Once the enzyme can't find any more organic material to feed on, it stops working.

Enzymes occur in nature and we're full of them, it turns out.  They help us digest our food and our blood to clot.  The key is finding the right enzyme for the job.  That is why Norwex has several different enzyme products for different purposes.

Norwex currently has the following enzyme products to help make cleaning easier and safer for you and your family:
Carpet Stain Buster
Oven & Grill Cleaner
Mattress Cleaner
Odour Eliminator
Laundry Pre-Wash
Drain Care

Enzyme products are good for 2 years after you open the bottle.  After that, they'll still work, they just won't be as effective.

My Top 10 Norwex Gift Ideas

Christmas is coming.  Your list is full of hard-to-shop-for-people.  What do you do?  Check out my list of top 10 Norwex gift ideas!  There's something for everyone here.  Norwex does have more than 10 items so you can check my website for other great ideas.  The links in the product descriptions below will take you to previous blog posts for the item so you can learn more about the products you're interested in.

#1 - Enviro Cloth:  This is a must have for every home.  You can clean 95+% of your home with this cloth using only water on it.  Not a fan of blue?  It also comes in yellow, green, and red (pink really).
#2 - Window Cloth: Once you remove the grease and grime from your windows, mirrors, faucets, stainless steel appliances, etc, use the Window cloth to dry the surface for a streak free shine.  No really, I'm not kidding.  Check out this post for more info on these first two items.  Want to save some money?  Buy the Basic Package which includes both the Enviro (blue) and Window cloths.

#3 - Dusting Mitt: Use it dry to easily dust all of your surfaces.  Use it damp to clean window screens.  The mitt is microfiber but has a higher pile than the Enviro cloth.  With the mitt on, it is easy to remove dust from even the oddest shaped objects.  And no more sprays that leave residues behind.  Want to save even more money?  Buy the Household Package which includes the Enviro cloth (green), window cloth, and dusting mitt.

#4 - Body Pack: How about a little pampering for yourself?  Or a friend or family member?  The body pack includes 3 cloths that are great for cleaning your face.  With just water!  How easy is that.  Simply your bedtime routine!  Body packs come in the vintage colors shown, neutral colors, and vibrant colors.
#5 - Naturally Timeless Lip Balm: This paraben-free lip balm includes organic aloe vera, coconut oil, and tea tree oil.  Can your current lip balm claim all that?  Check out the ingredients of your current lip balm.  You may be surprised what you find.  And not in a good way.
#6 - Cleaning Paste: This really should be higher on the list but I got tired of cleaning products at the top of a Christmas list.  While they are awesome cleaning products, it's good to pamper ourselves during the holidays too.  Anyway, this is another must have item for your house.  Excellent for glass top stoves, sinks, soap scum on shower doors and tub, cleaning grout, removing cleaning solution residue from stainless steel appliances, removing rust spots on flatware, and so much more.  I've had my cleaning paste since February, use it at home and at all my parties, and still have 3/4 of it left.  It lasts forever!

#7 - Superior Mop Set: This is one of the most coveted items in our catalog because of it's ease of use and how well it works.  The yellow pad is the superior dry mop pad.  This pad picks up all the fine dust that leaves streaks when you mop.  The blue pad is the wet pad.  Just get it damp with water and clean your floors like they have never been cleaned before.  You use just water so there is no residue left behind for your kids or pets to pick up when they walk across the floor.

#8 - Ultra Power Plus Laundry Detergent: Filler free, fragrance free, dye free.  If you have an HE machine, you need 1 tsp. of detergent to make your brights bright and your whites white.  With 1 tsp, you will get 276 loads from a bag.  That's $0.08 per load!  This also works in traditional washing machines, you just need a little more.
#9 - Dryer Balls:  Dryer sheets are full of all kinds of chemicals.  Then you dry your clothes with them and those chemicals coat your clothing.  Then you put the clothes up against your skin all day.  Your skin is the largest organ you have.  It absorbs all of those chemicals.  Think about how a nicotine patch works...  Norwex dryer balls are softer than other brands so they don't make the clunking noise in your machine.  They tumble with your clothes, lifting and separating so your cloths dry faster, saving you more money!

#10 - Descaler:  This is the product that really caught my husband's attention.  I cleaned our shower doors and our bathroom didn't stink for days afterwards.  This product is great for removing mineral build-up on shower doors, around sink faucets, on sink faucets, around sink drains, or from refrigerator drip trays under the water dispenser.
#11 - Mattress Cleaner: Alright, I know I said this was a top 10 list but then I thought of an 11th amazing product.  Our mattresses are full of dust mites.  And what do dust mites do?  They poop.  For many, this poop irritates their throats and this is what causes them to snore.  I've heard many many stories of people who got a better night of sleep thanks to the Mattress Cleaner.  The cleaner is an enzyme based cleaner.  You spray 10-12 sprays on a king size mattress every 3-4 months.  The enzymes eat the dust mites food source (dead skin cells) and poop.  This causes the dust mites to starve.  Then the mattress cleaner goes to work digesting the little bodies leaving you with a clean mattress.  Once the enzymes have done their work, they break down on their own.  Why not give the gift of better sleep!

Basic Package - Dirty Dirty Windows

I've finally finished up my craft fair items for this weekend so hopefully things lighten up a bit.  There hasn't been much cleaning going on here lately so I'm looking through some old cleaning projects I didn't post before.

We had to get a new front door in August.  Shortly after that, we had to have the front step mudjacked.  The sidelight windows were DIRTY!  I showed you how Norwex microfiber removes butter from windows (and all the other greasy stuff in your kitchen), but what about dirt?

I grabbed my Enviro Cloth and got it wet with water.  Then I grabbed my dry Window Cloth.  That's it.  No spray bottles required.  (These two cloths can be purchased as a set called a Basic Package to save some $!)
I folded the Enviro Cloth twice to give me eight sides to work with.  I wiped down the window with my Enviro Cloth to remove the dirt and grime then wiped it with my dry Window Cloth to get a streak free shine!  Easy as that.

If I had been feeling ambitious, I could have kept cleaning window with the same set of cloths.  Once all eight sides have been used, simply run the Enviro Cloth under running water.  Rub it against itself and wring out.  Now you're ready to continue cleaning windows, mirrors, counters, cabinets, woodwork, sinks, showers, toilets... you get the idea.

I just want to comment on the upcoming holidays.  Don't get me wrong I LOVE Christmas time but it's already starting to overwhelm me a bit.  October went by in such a blur and now we're well into November.  By now I usually have a list of who I need to buy for and some ideas of what I'm going to get them.  I'm hoping to get a handle on this over the weekend.  Anyway, Norwex makes an excellent gift.  My posts in the next couple of weeks will focus on some great gift ideas.  (The Basic Package makes a fantastic gift!)

Mattress Cleaner - How it Works

Unless you are sleeping on a brand new mattress and pillow, you are never sleeping alone.

These yucky guys move into your mattress and pillow pretty quickly.  This is a large picture of a dust mite.  They feed off of the dead skin cells that you slough off at night.  Now anything that eats, must poop.  Guess where they're pooping.  Mattresses and pillows gain 10% in weight every year because of all this poop.  GROSS!

Never fear, Norwex has a solution for you!  The Mattress Cleaner is an enzyme product that goes to work eating and composting those dead skin cells, dust mite poop, and dust mite bodies.  This removes the dust mites food source so they starve.  Once the enzymes have nothing left to eat, they break down into carbon dioxide and water leaving you with a very clean mattress!

You only need 12 sprays for a king or queen size mattress, 8 for a double, 5 for a twin, and 1-2 for a pillow.  You can also spray stuffed animals (2 sprays) and furniture (5 for a fabric couch).  Norwex recommends spraying your mattress and pillows every 4 months.  For people who are more sensitive to dust mites, they may need to use it more often.

For some people, snoring is caused by all of this fecal matter irritating their throats.  I have a friend who knows when to treat her mattress because her husband starts snoring again.  She's not the only one.  I have heard many similar stories.  Some call it their "marriage saver" spray. :)

What else is Mattress Cleaner great for?  Well, it's excellent at removing pet urine smell from carpets and fabric.  It also works great as a grout cleaner.  (See my previous post for pictures.)

Now, time to go get some sleep!

Matress Cleaner - Grout Cleaner

I've heard that the Mattress Cleaner works really well for cleaning grout.  My shower grout was in need of cleaning so I gave it a shot.
Kinda gross.  I sprayed it with Mattress Cleaner and let it sit for 5 minutes.  Then I got my handy dandy toothbrush and went to town.
After a little scrubbing, the grout looked pretty darn good!

You can also check out this blog post for cleaning your grout with Cleaning Paste.

Check back in the next couple of days for more posts regarding the Mattress Cleaner.

I Cleaned the House...

And didn't use any chemicals!

First, I apologize for not blogging more.  I have so many more product tests that I'd like to do but time is not in my favor these days.  Back in January, before I discovered Norwex, I agreed to participate in a craft fair.  I thought I'd have time between then and early November to be creative.  Well, I did but all that effort went into my business.  So, now I'm scrambling to make some crafty items to sell.  All else is taking a back seat right now.

Ok, now to the heart of this post.  Thanks to the rain we finally got on Saturday, I was able to stay inside and clean!  Yes, it was exciting as I'd let it go for so long.  I dusted, cleaned the floors, bathrooms, and kitchen.  Oh, and did 15 loads of laundry over the weekend.  I felt compelled to wash ALL the bedding in addition to all the other laundry I needed to do.  At the end of the day, I was quite happy with the smell of the house.  It didn't smell of anything.  No cleaners were used in the cleaning of my house.

I used the mop to scrub the floors with water (Jason noticed they looked fantastic).  I used a wet enviro cloth to wipe down my entire kitchen, including counters, cabinets, sink, & appliances.  I used the same enviro cloth and a window cloth in my bathrooms for the mirrors, counters, cabinets, and sinks.  I used the dusting mitt to dust book shelves, pictures, and furniture.  I used the Sanira toilet bowl system for the toilets.  I used Ultra Power Plus laundry detergent to wash the bedding.  And I used the mattress spray to get rid of the dust mites and their poop in our mattresses and pillows.  That was it.  That took care of everything.  I wish I had timed myself because I know it took me a lot less time to do all that than it used to.

It took less time and I feel better that my family, especially the kids, weren't exposed to any chemical residue or fumes.  I also didn't contribute to air pollution and reduced my carbon footprint.  The mop pads, enviro cloth, window cloth, and dusting mitt are all washable and reusable for many many years.  Yeah, it makes me feel good.

Dish Cloth

Norwex microfiber cloths are not intended for use for washing dishes.  All of the soap can render the silver ineffective.  What do you use to wash the dishes then?  The dish cloth
Here is a picture of the dish cloth.  It's quite large at 17" x 17".
Here is a closer up view of the weave.  This cloth is woven this way so that food debris doesn't get stuck and start to stink as they do in a traditional dish cloth.

So, how do you use this thing?

Fold it several times.  Now it fits nicely in your hand.

When I wash dishes, I get it wet and put just a few drops of Norwex Dishwashing Liquid on it.
It was hard to get a good picture of the soap in the cloth but you can see it on my fingers.  The cloth does make a nice soapy lather.  Because of the weave and the folding, you get a nice gentle scrub with it.  It won't scratch, but will scrub your tough to clean dishes.

Since food debris can easily be washed out of the cloth, you can use it for several days before you need to launder it.  Then you can launder it as you would the rest of your laundry.

Another interesting use I've heard of for this cloth is to clean the bugs off the front of cars.  Several people have mentioned using for that purpose.  I haven't tried this yet but I can see how it would work for that use.

Dishwashing Liquid - Cherry Juice

My kids LOVE cherries.  Cherries are full of bright red juice.  :(  This means some really messy clothing.
It's pretty clear where the drops of cherry juice landed.  Hmmm...

I treated the spots with some Norwex Dishwashing Liquid and threw them in the laundry.

Poof!  No more spots!

Promoted! Team Coordinator

Another person recently joined my team.  I now have 3 team members so I've been promoted to Team Coordinator!  What does that mean?  It means I can start earning commission on those on my team to reimburse me for the time I've spent helping them get their business up and running!

Crystal Deodorant

It took me a while before I embraced Norwex's Crystal Deodorant.  In the past I had tried nearly every brand of deodorant/antiperspirant on the typical store shelf.  I finally found one where I didn't smell like BO at the end of the day.  I really thought I was going to have to see a doctor for a prescription brand.  Also, the Norwex deodorant sounded a little too high maintenance for me.

Then I started reading about the contents of deodorants and antiperspirants.  I quickly ordered the Norwex Crystal Deodorant after that.  Once I used it successfully for a couple of weeks, I ordered one for my mom too.

Here's the summed up version of the blurb below: Norwex's Crystal Deodorant doesn't contain aluminum that can be absorbed.  Antiperspirants, however, contain aluminum chloride, which are supposed to lodge themselves into your sweat glands.  If you want all the details, read the blurb below.  Otherwise, skip it to read more about my experience with it.

From Norwex's Global Tech Advisor:  "One of the most interesting ingredients used in controlling body odour is a naturally occurring mineral salt called Alunite. Otherwise known as Ammonium alum, this is an abundant earth mineral and, along with other forms of alum, forms about 8% of the earth’s crust. It is found in small quantities in many of the foods we eat, and is considered as very safe in personal care and other external uses. It should be noted that whilst Ammonium alum does contain some aluminium, it is bonded into a molecule that is physically too large to penetrate the skin. This is because the largest molecule that can penetrate the skin has a molecular mass of less than 500 Da, whereas Alunite has a molecular mass of 670 Da - much too large to be able to pass through the skin. Therefore, this ingredient will not block pores nor cause skin irritation in the same way that the aluminium salts mentioned in connection with antiperspirants can.
When Ammonium alum is applied to the skin it acts as a coagulant, constricting protein and thereby reducing the ability of bacteria to thrive. It is not such a powerful antibacterial as some synthetic substances used, but when applied regularly to freshly washed skin it is remarkably effective.
Unlike the molecules of aluminum chloride used in antiperspirants that are designed to lodge themselves in sweat glands, ammonium alum molecules are much too large to be absorbed by the skin."

Now, what you're really wondering is does it work and how long does it last.  I have been remarkably surprised at how well it works.  I started using it at the end of July.  Now, it's been HOT here in IA and I have not had any stink.

How long does it last?  Well, it'll last a year or so.  Here are some pictures.

These were taken on August 4th, probably a week after I started using it. (I didn't think to take any of it brand new.)
This one was also taken on August 4th.

This was taken yesterday, on September 16th, 6 weeks after the pictures above.  Still a lot of deodorant left!

Also taken on September 16th.

Now, as I mentioned before, this is a higher maintenance product.  It will take on a BO smell to it if not wiped down after each use.  It doesn't matter how well you wash or how quickly you apply it after getting out of the shower.  So, I just run it under water, apply under my arms, run it under water again, and wipe it with a corner of my body cloth that is hanging next to the sink.  I also store it with the lid off.  This keeps the odor away.  I've found it to be less of a pain then I originally imagined.

These extra steps are well worth it to keep any extra gunk out of my body!

You can read my 7 month follow up on the Norwex Crystal Deodorant here.
The crystal deodorant can help you with those itchy mosquito bites too!
